What is happening to Gemini Gems?

A Gem is a saved helper inside Google's Gemini. You give it instructions and files once, and it remembers them every time.

Google is now replacing Gems with skills. A skill is also saved instructions, but you can use it inside any Gemini chat by typing / and its name, and Gemini can pick the right skill for you.

Dates are from Google's Gemini Help Centre, checked 1 November 2026. Some Gem files won't carry across (audio, video, zip and old Office files), so download anything important first.

The real problem: a Gem writes, but it can't do

Gems are brilliant at writing. But then you copy the words into your email platform, paste the contact into your CRM (the system that holds your contacts), create the booking link and set the reminder. The AI wrote it. You still did all the work.

Are Gemini Gems going away?

Yes. Google is replacing Gems with skills. On personal Google accounts for people 18 and over, Gems become read-only from 17 November 2026 and are removed on 17 December 2026. Workspace business accounts follow from March 2027 and school accounts from June 2027.
